Traversée/Crossing explores the rich connections between water-sports and contemporary art. Featuring practices, spaces, and rituals associated with swimming, diving, surfing, canoeing, kayaking, and boating, the exhibition considers how aquatics can highlight important cultural, socio-political, and economic questions. The works on view demonstrate how present-day water sports are often rooted in colonial histories or sites of exclusionary behaviours. Playing in water, with boats or their bodies, many of the artists celebrate queer, Black, and Indigenous life, reclaiming the water as a safe, spiritual space of leisure
