February 23, 2022 – Update by the provincial government regarding the COVID-19 pandemic

Here is a status report on the recent decisions and actions of the provincial government in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Easing of health measures

Dr. Luc Boileau, Acting National Director of Public Health, and Marie-France Raynault, Senior Strategic Medical Advisor of the Direction générale de la santé publique of the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, today announced an easing of health measures.

“We are very pleased to confirm that mask wearing will no longer be mandatory in the classroom very soon. The situation is improving and this is also reflected in the schools. The different measures in place contribute to offering a safe environment for students and staff,” Dr Luc Boileau pointed out.

End of mask wearing in the classroom

Starting on March 7, elementary and secondary school students will no longer have to wear a mask when they are sitting in the classroom.

Note that mask wearing will continue to be mandatory in the common areas, during students’ movements and on school transportation, for now.

Moreover, according to the estimates presented today, between 35% and 40% of children have been in contact with COVID-19, in a context where nearly three million Quebecers have contracted COVID-19 since the beginning of the fifth wave.

Booster dose for adolescents 12 to 17 years old

The Québec Immunization Committee (CIQ) recommend the booster dose against COVID-19 for adolescents 12 to 17 years old who present a higher risk of complications linked to COVID-19.

Adolescents living in closed group environments should also obtain this booster dose, given the particularly high risk of transmission.

However, the booster dose may be offered to all adolescents 12 to 17 years old who do not present a contraindication and who would like to obtain additional protection.

The booster dose must be administered three months or more after the second vaccine dose or a COVID-19 infection.
