May 19, 2022 starting at 5 p.m. – Opening of the new Olive-Urquhart Sports Centre

The mayor of the City of Pointe-Claire, Tim Thomas, and the members of the City Council are proud to announce the opening of the new Olive-Urquhart Sports Centre effective Thursday, May 19 at 5 p.m. For the occasion, open house days will be offered up to May 31 inclusive.

“This new municipal building meets our population’s growing needs for sports and recreation with more facilities and equipment. With the return to a more normal life after the difficult times experienced over the past two years due to the pandemic, everyone is invited to take advantage of these new spaces to get moving, have fun and take care of themselves, with friends or family, or solo,” Mayor Thomas pointed out.

The new Sports Centre includes a pool with a walk-in end and a slide, a double gym for pickleball, floor hockey, basketball, soccer, volleyball and badminton, a 150-metre running and walking track, two squash courts, a spinning room, boxing and stretching zones, training and weight rooms totalling over a hundred machines and varied equipment, and studios and rooms for group classes and community activities.

The Centre also has five locker rooms, including two reserved for people age 18 and over, with a whirlpool and steam room. Equipped with an elevator and an adapted locker room, the Centre allows easy access to the three floors for people with reduced mobility.

The open house days, from May 19 at 5 p.m. to May 31 inclusive, will allow everyone to discover and benefit from these new municipal facilities on a first come, first served basis. By participating in the open house days, you have a chance of winning one of the 100 training towels with the City’s logo. The draw will be held in June.

The new Sports Centre will be open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  A daily, monthly or annual membership will be offered with varied rates, depending on the clientele. Registration will be held on site. To consult the rates, click here.

For spring and summer, the program will focus mainly on unstructured activities. Starting in the fall, group classes will be added to the City’s program and registration will be done online.

The West Island YMCA will continue to offer a varied program of group classes and community activities. For more details on its program, click here.

In memory of Olive Louise Urquhart

Last March, the City Council announced the official naming of the new Sports Centre in memory of Olive Louise Urquhart, the first woman Mayor of Pointe-Claire and second women mayor in Québec. A great visionary, Ms. Urquhart made a remarkable and significant contribution to the development of Pointe-Claire, and particularly to the industrial park. Her many contributions helped enrich our living environment and make our city what it is today.
