New schedule for waste materials collection beginning April 3

Beginning April 3, all collection trucks will be fueled by biodiesel, as part of our ongoing commitment to practices rooted in sustainable development. This will lead to a significant reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases produced. The new system will lead to changes in collection schedules and types of bin, with increases in some collections.

CURRENT SCHEDULE BEGINNING APRIL 3
Pick-up period Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Waste materials at curbside Between 9 p.m. the night before and 7 p.m. the morning of the collection Between 9 p.m. the night before and 7 p.m. the morning of the collection
Organic materials Every Tuesday Every Monday
Recyclable materials Every Tuesday Every Monday
Household waste Every other Wednesday, alternating between sectors A and B Every other Tuesday, alternating between sectors A and B

The new contract for collection and transportation of residual materials may lead to changes in pickup times. It’s important to put your bin or containers out before the collection period begins at 7 a.m.

Adjustments will probably take place throughout the first weeks, so please wait until the end of the day before advising Public Works that your waste materials have not been picked up.

Here are specific instructions for each collection.

ORGANIC MATERIALS

  • Only the City’s green rolling bins (80, 120 and 240 litres) are accepted. Contact Public Works if you need a second bin.
  • Only organic materials placed in the bin will be picked up.
  • The bin must not weigh more than 150 lb (67 kg).
  • The cover of the bin must be completely closed.
  • Plastic bags are not accepted, even if they are identified as compostable or biodegradable.
SEASONAL LEAF COLLECTIONS
  • 4 collections: May 1, June 12, October 30 and November 13.
  • Reusable containers of any kind, paper bags, and the City’s green rolling bins are accepted.
RECYCLABLE MATERIALS
  • Only the City’s blue rolling bins (80, 120 and 360 litres) are accepted. Contact Public Works if you need a second bin. Only recyclable materials placed in the bin will be picked up.
  • The cover of the bin must be completely closed.
  • Containers must be rinsed before you put them in the bin.
HOUSEHOLD WASTE
  • Waste may be put in reusable plastic or metal containers, or rolling bins, with a maximum volume of 100 litres per container or bin.
  • A maximum of 360 litres, the equivalent of one rolling bin or three plastic bags, will be picked up for each address.

All of these changes will enable us to limit our greenhouse gas emissions by using biodiesel fuel from mid-April to mid-November and regular diesel during the rest of the year.

This initiative, along with many others, is part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable development.
