Engineering team was a finalist for inventing a locking cover
The mayor of the City of Pointe-Claire, Morris Trudeau, is proud to announce that the Pointe-Claire Engineering team was a finalist in the CNESST’s Grands prix santé et sécurité au travail, in the Public Agencies category, for inventing a locking cover that blocks access to water mains during interventions on the network.
The locking cover helps ensure the safety of City employees and citizens by blocking access to drinking water supply valves while engineering work is being carried out or a breakage in the network is repaired. The cover, which is easy to use, is equipped with a carrying handle that minimizes risk of injury.
The Engineering team’s invention aligns with one of the objectives in the City’s 2015-2018 strategic plan, namely to foster innovation. The nomination highlights the innovation, expertise and competence of City teams working to improve techniques and promote best practices in terms of safety.
“This device shows our desire to support our staff’s ingenuity and creative spirit,” says Mayor Trudeau. “Our teams have been benefitting from this simple, effective tool for several years. Using it increases everyone’s safety because it makes it impossible to open up a valve at the wrong moment.”
The Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité au travail (CNESST) holds the occupational health and safety contest to emphasize innovative actions and achievements that promote occupational health and safety. The contest is open to SMEs, public agencies and large companies. Last year, the Public Works team was also nominated for creating a safety mechanism that immobilizes City vehicles during repair work.
“We are proud of this nomination, which helps publicize the ingenuity of our team across Quebec so that others can benefit from it,” concludes Mayor Trudeau. “The health and safety of employees and residents is very important to us, and developing new processes is part of our commitment to ongoing improvement.”
