September 7, 2022 – Update by the provincial government regarding the COVID-19 pandemic

Here is a status report on the recent decisions and actions of the provincial government in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Luc Boileau, National Director of Public Health, and Caroline Quach-Thanh, pediatrician, microbiologist-infection diseases specialist at CHU Sainte-Justine, full professor at the Université de Montréal and Chair of the Québec Immunization Committee (CIQ), reported on the COVID-19 situation in Québec.

Bivalent vaccine available starting Thursday

The bivalent vaccine will be available in Québec vaccination centres as of the afternoon of September 8, 2022.

This new vaccine targets both the original strain of COVID-19 and the Omicron BA subvariant. 1.

“The message remains the same. It is important to receive the recommended doses of the COVID vaccine for your condition in order to be as well protected as possible. We are gradually entering the fall, and the risks of having an increase in the circulation of current variants or new variants are always increasing”, emphasized Dr. Luc Boileau.

Note that children aged five and over are now eligible for the mass vaccination campaign with the old vaccine, since the new one has only been approved for people aged 18 and over.

Flu vaccination campaign

The flu vaccination campaign (seasonal flu) will be moved forward this year.

It will start at the beginning of October, and the flu vaccine could be administered at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine.

Details of this vaccination campaign will be specified in the next few weeks.
