Jenny Anderson – Pottery

About the artisan

Although primarily self-taught, I have attended pottery courses at Claycrafters, John Abbott College, St. Lawrence College and clay workshops through FUSION (Ontario Clay and Glass). I am a member of the Baie d’Urfé Potters Guild and an active participant in their workshops and their biannual exhibition and sale.

The selection

My pottery is primarily functional stoneware and is oven, microwave and dishwasher friendly. I make items for:

  • Meal preparation: bowls for rinsing fruit/vegetables, mixing and serving
  • Storage: butter, garlic, sugar, honey, cookies, kitchen compost
  • Serving: jugs, casseroles, sushi plates, pie dishes, mugs, tea bowls and small teapots.

Drawing inspiration from nature, I decorate these pots with blue brushwork on a white glaze or white and black brushwork on a nutmeg coloured glaze. My designs are created with the intention of bringing joy to the user!

Sheila Caplan – Pottery

About the artisan

I have been working with clay since the mid 1970s and am still as passionate about it over 40 years later! Shows I have participated in include 1001POTS, the Roxham Woolgathering, and Westmount Artisans. I have taught pottery at the Baie d’Urfé Potters Guild, Town of Mount Royal Recreation Centre, and from my studio in Montreal West.

The selection

The pots are made with stoneware clay, mostly on the wheel, some in slabs or coils, and are oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe. I prepare my own glaze, firing in an electric kiln to cone 6 (2,200°F). In addition to functional ware for your kitchen and dining table, I also make some useful bathroom items, as well as decorative pieces (e.g. planters, vases). I enjoy producing dinnerware, and have completed several custom orders of dishes. To know that my pots are being used and appreciated in people’s daily lives means a lot to me.

Rafic Dagher – Wood and soapstone carving

About the artisan

I started out as a metalworker and then became a technology teacher at the secondary level for 32 years, working both in Montréal and overseas. Being retired for the last 17 years has given me the chance to explore my favourite media, mainly wood and soapstone. I also run a soapstone workshop at Stewart Hall.

The selection

The types of wood that I use are North American species that are not in danger of extinction. I design and hand-produce all of my own products, most of which are for use in the preparation and serving of food, and some of which are decorative objects. I also use live-edge wood to make coffee tables and benches. Food products are finished with mineral oil and bees wax. Soapstone products are finished with water-based varnish and bees wax.

Carmen Marie Fabio – Wind chimes

About the artisan

Decades of collecting shiny metal, beads and anything that makes noise has resulted in honing the art of marrying wind and “junk” to create something new.

With a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and a preference for working in three-dimensions, Carmen Marie Fabio’s work is comprised of 95 per cent recycled or found objects. Any materials purchased in their making typically come from community fripperies and church basements, allowing money to go back to the community.

The selection

My wind chimes are handcrafted from reclaimed silver-plated cutlery, driftwood from Lake St. Louis, vintage teapots and all manner of found items. No two products are exactly alike. My goal is always to work with found and reclaimed objects. I also make pendants, purse charms and keychains with old silver-plated cutlery, resin and found notions. I spend a lot of time in junk shops.

Valery Hefter – Leather and fur

About the artisan

I decided to work with furs and genuine leathers because I have experience with sewing. I followed an online course headed by a European teacher. Over the past five years, I have participated in several big craft fairs: the D.D.O. Christmas Craft Fair, La Semaine des artisans de Laval, the Pointe-Claire Artisan Show, Rigaud’s Festival of Colours, Le Festival de montgolfières de Gatineau, and several others around the province of Québec.

The selection

In regards to my production, I begin by working my design and pattern. I cut the fur and leather and I do all the sewing myself to create hats, mittens, hair bands, and more.  I use high quality recycled furs.

Majid Sadri – Hand-painted silk items

About the artisan

Whether abstract or figurative, the one universal aspect that attracts viewers to any art piece is harmony. I am an artist, and while I enjoy painting through many mediums, my passion is natural textile, particularly silk.  A love for nature and imagination meet on a medium as old as nature itself. Combined with a unique style and technique, these are the ingredients of my work.

The selection

Along with the use of harmoniously combined colours, multi-layering and visually pleasing patterns, textures and designs, I translate my vision jointly with a painterly approach to create unique wearable and decorative silk art. As a professional artist for more than 30 years, I have participated in many exhibitions across Canada, including retail and wholesale shows such as the One of A Kind Show in Toronto, Signatures in Ottawa, and Salon des métiers d’art du Québec in Montréal.

Sharon Schneider – Handmade soaps

About the artisan

I started making soap in 1997 to help raise funds for a charity supporting destitute students in Zimbabwe. After the charity closed, I renamed my enterprise “Tannahill Handcrafted Soap” after my orphaned grandfather, whose birth name was Tannahill. The next step was joining the Marché Sainte-Anne, the local Saturday activity for West Islanders. Being part of a market dedicated to a natural way of life, as well as matching a soap’s name to its fragrance and chatting with market visitors, are some of the pleasures that my little cottage industry brings me.

The selection

I produce the soap in small batches using the cold-process method and only plant-based oils and natural colours. The soothing properties of this product are due to the high content of almond oil and shea butter. A dollop of vitamin E offers antioxidant properties, while the naturally produced glycerin works to retain moisture, further protecting skin from the drying elements of winter.
