EXHIBITIONS

The Stewart Hall Art Gallery presents high-quality professional exhibitions. Specializing in contemporary art, the Gallery actively supports the visual arts in Quebec and in Canada by acknowledging established artists and promoting emerging ones. It helps make art accessible to all through its cultural mediation and educational programs (workshops, talks, film screenings and lectures).

 VISIONS OF STEWART HALL

Stroll through the halls of the Stewart Hall Cultural Centre and journey into the history of this stately mansion. Discover the important figures who lived there and its various vocations before it became the Cultural Centre in 1963.

MOVING SOUND

How do you visually express an auditory and musical experience? Discover the works of artists whose practice focuses on visually representing the experience of sound through installations, drawings, sculptures and printed works. The work of these artists, which is marked by its relationship to both visual arts and music, engages in a living dialogue with space and time.

Among the works presented, Mitch Mitchell’s Boombox is a wonderful addition to the Virtual Cabinet of Curiosities and the 30 intriguing and inspiring curiosities it features as part of the Montreal Museums Tour.

PIANOCKTAIL

Inspired by Boris Vian’s L’Écume des jours, Pianocktail is a living piece that carries music and notes into the visible world. All the chords played on the piano resonate through the projected light with a specific identity. It is the meeting between sound waves and moving photons.

Hua Jin, The Same River

THE PERMANENT COLLECTION ON DISPLAY – Hua Jin AND James Nizam

Photographers James Nizam and Hua Jin explore their environment with sensitivity, focusing on the observation of time through light. Their works have been part of the City of Pointe-Claire’s permanent collection since 2019, following their participation in the exhibitions Flowers and Monsters and LUMINA.

FEATURED ARTISAN: MANON BOISVERT

Manon Boisvert’s Bolder Art Collection was created to help people deepen their connection with the Earth. This relationship with nature and the animal world is one she has continuously explored through drawing and painting for the past thirty years. Prints and cards from this collection are available at the Boutique.

Adam Basanta, Density as a physical property, 2017

MEETING WITH ADAM BASANTA AND MITCH MITCHELL

Adam Basanta is an artist, composer and performer of experimental music. His current work investigates technology, futurology and the use of biological materials. Mitch Mitchell’s project-based art explores the psychology of labour and familial histories through the production of print-based practices. Learn more about how they combine visual arts and music, as well as their most recent projects.

MEETING WITH MOJEANNE BEHZADI AND ARTISTS FROM THE SPILLOVER LOVE EXHIBITION

Tiohtà:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal-based art historian, curator and poet Mojeanne Behzadi currently runs Art Speaks, an international contemporary art speaker series, and coordinates research and exhibitions at Artexte. Her current curatorial research revolves around the theme of love as a radical tool for resistance, protest and social transformation.

LOVING MONSTERS

Through a mixture of materials and a fragmented aesthetic, Cindy Phenix’s work reveals monsters that inspire both fear and love. In addition to admiring her work at the Stewart Hall Art Gallery, you will explore Cindy Phenix’s pictorial technique, which combines drawing, painting and collage. You will create a monster whose atypical and deformed body will become a symbol of love and tenderness. Bring your lunch!

MiNi ART RENTAL COLLECTION – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS (2nd edition)

The Art Rental and Sales Service of the Stewart Hall Art Gallery invites parents and guardians to submit the works of their budding artists for the second edition of the MiNi Art Rental Collection, a project that showcases artwork created by children age 12 and under.

Information will be available on the City’s website early June.

PAPER STORIES – MANON GAUTHIER

Manon Gauthier is a self-taught illustrator and collagist who previously worked in graphic arts. Since 2006, she has illustrated numerous books in Québec, Europe and Asia, such as Poésies pour la vie by Gilles Tibo, and De Jade Janvier à Dany Décembre by Bertrand Gauthier. Her work has received numerous awards and she has been nominated four times for the prestigious Governor General’s Literary Award. Manon also leads creative art workshops in elementary schools.

VIRTUAL MINI-EXHIBITION:

IN THE MANNER OF MANON GAUTHIER

In fall 2020, the Pointe-Claire Public Library organized a series of virtual workshops between illustrator and collagist Manon Gauthier and grade 3 and 4 students from École Marguerite-Bourgeoys. Through these workshops, students discover various albums illustrated by the artist and are initiated in the artist’s technique so that they can create their own collage, accompanied by a short story.

WHIMSICAL SEA CREATURES…AND OTHER IMPROBABLE SPECIES
CATHERINE BOUCHARD

Discover the playful world of Catherine Bouchard through her sardine cushions fished from the sea, her wacky animal sculptures and her colourful paintings. Inspired by the 70s, her creations stand out by the richness of their colours and astonish us with their free spirit.

Lunch with a Work of Art

Come discover the sculpture at the entrance of Stewart Hall by artist André Dubois. An exploration of his work will be followed by a workshop where sculpture, light and shadow come together. Bring your lunch!

LES OMBRES CLAIRES (The Clear Shadows)

Under a veiled tent, you will experience the work of artist Rihab Essayh in this exhibition entitled Spillover Love presented at Stewart Hall from July 11 to August 29. During this family art workshop, we invite you to create your own happy space. Decorative fabric will serve to build a cabin in your image.

THE LAKE IN TWO STAGES

Have you noticed the new exhibition of photographs at Edgewater Park? Light and landscape intersect in the artworks of James Nizam and Hua Jin. This drawing workshop unfolds in the calm and relaxing atmosphere on Lake Saint-Louis’s shoreline. A superimposed drawing will emerge from observing the movements and lights from the lake.

READING AND REFERENCE ROOM

The Stewart Hall Reading and Reference Room is a friendly space that is open to all at no charge. Come and discover the book collection, handmade items from the Boutique, and works of art from the Art Rental and Sales Service, or just enjoy a relaxing space that will awaken your curiosity.

OPENING HOURS: The Reasind and Reference Room is temporarily closed to the public.

KIDS’ CORNER : Beat boredom!

Your kids will have a great time discovering our fantastic selection of educational board games and puzzles to bust boredom and develop patience and concentration.

OPENING HOURS: The exhibition is open during the Cultural Centre’s opening hours; however, there’s currently no access to books and games.

The Cultural Centre offers daycares a special program of shows and workshops to introduce the little ones to the performing arts.

PRESCHOOL AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES


VISUAL ARTS COMPONENT

Based on the spirit of discovery, this program offers activities to daycare centres, school groups, and homeschoolers. Through the Stewart Hall Art Gallery’s guided tours, they can enjoy works of art adapted to their level. Art workshops given by an art educator allow them to deepen their appreciation through a practical activity and playing with different materials.

GUIDED TOURS AND ART WORKSHOPS
Guided tours and art workshops are also offered to groups: seniors’ residences, cultural or community organizations, and others.

SPECIAL PROJECTS  Specific projects designed for and with partners and members of the community.
