A shining legacy: Former Mayor McMurchie’s lamp post in Stewart Park
William Franklin McMurchie served as City Councillor from 1990 to 1998 before being elected Mayor of the City of Pointe-Claire, a position he held from 1998 to 2013. He also served as Borough Mayor from 2001 to 2005, when the Borough merged with the City of Montreal.
During his tenure, McMurchie played a crucial role in the demerger of Pointe-Claire from the City of Montreal, chairing the group “Pointe-Claire Citizens for Demerger.”
Passionate about arts and culture, he has always been a fervent admirer of the Stewart Hall Cultural Centre and a dedicated ambassador for the activities held there.
In keeping with tradition, the City offers its mayors a lamp post installed on the grounds of their residence. Following the sale of his home, former Mayor McMurchie wanted his lamp post to become public property and moved to the Stewart Hall Cultural Centre grounds.
Strollers can now admire this newly installed lamp post in Stewart Park.
Here’s a photo of McMurchie’s lamp post in the park, together with a picture shared by the family of the recent 65th wedding anniversary celebration of William Franklin McMurchie and Denise Chartrain.
