Adoption of the by-law on drinking water usage in Pointe-Claire

During the regular meeting of June 4, 2024, the City Council adopted a new by-law on the use of drinking water. This is one of the important initiatives that Pointe-Claire is implementing as part of the ecological transition and resilience of its territory, as outlined in the City’s 2023-2030 Strategic Plan.

It was important for the City to take concrete steps towards the conservation of potable water and the sustainable use of this precious resource, while following the objectives defined in the Government of Québéc’s Stratégie d’économie de l’eau.

What does this new regulation entail?

Through this new by-law, the City is putting in place the necessary measures to reduce water waste and promote good water usage habits for residents and businesses alike.

Among the measures and conditions stipulated in the by-law, residents are required to respect lawn and garden watering periods, have adequate automatic watering systems and respect pool and spa filling periods. In addition, the by-law will set out the conditions under which property cleaning and car washing may be carried out.

This new regulation has been in effect since June 4, 2024, but the City offers a grace period to enable residents to modify their consumption habits and adopt best practices when it comes to water usage. As a result, only warnings will be issued to those who fail to comply to this by-law during the 2024 summer season.

The City of Pointe-Claire is proud to join the many municipalities that have adopted responsible measures to protect and manage this collective heritage. Let’s protect water responsibly and use it sustainably for the benefit of our present and future citizens.
