August 26, 2020 – Federal government update on the COVID-19 pandemic

Here is an update on recent decisions and actions by the Canadian government in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

$2 billion in assistance for schools

Premier Justin Trudeau announced an additional $2 billion in assistance for the provinces and territories in order to guarantee a safe return to school for children in the context of COVID-19.

Mr. Trudeau specified that this assistance is in addition to the measures already taken by the provinces and schools because the return to school this year is unique given the pandemic.

The contribution represents about $400 per student between the ages of 4 and 18 across Canada. Québec could receive up to $432.15 M. Payments will be made in two instalments: the first half will be disbursed immediately, and the second in January 2021.

This sum can be used at the discretion of the provinces, be it to purchase health products and disinfectants or to offer distance learning.
