City of Pointe-Claire honored by Réseau Environnement for its water management efforts
The City of Pointe-Claire was one of 42 municipalities honored by Réseau Environnement, an organization with the largest network of environmental specialists in Québec, at the 46th edition of the Symposium sur la gestion de l’eau (Symposium on water management). This recognition was awarded to municipalities who demonstrated efforts to reduce their water consumption over the last year.
The Écon’eau program, which is a program that helps support municipalities reduce their water consumption, is evaluated on three main factors: the infrastructure leakage index, residential consumption, and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) water audit. The City, currently in Phase 2 Certification – 2 Stars of this program, met the last two criteria, which qualified it for this recognition.
Pointe-Claire is also one of the municipalities with a 5-star certification in the organization’s Programme d’excellence en eau potable – Traitement (PEXEP-T) (Drinking Water Excellence Program – Treatment), which aims to eliminate all microbiological contamination during the water treatment process. Nearly five million citizens of Québec are supplied with treated water from the municipalities who are members of the PEXEP-T.
Réseau Environment’s call to action
The organization issued a call to action at the symposium, which took place on October 22, 2024, to end the underfunding of water services. According to Mathieu Laneuville, CEO of Réseau Environnement, about one-fifth of the entire water distribution network is in poor or very poor condition.
As a result, the organization is working towards finding sustainable solutions to effectively finance water services and upkeep water networks, which are relied upon by several municipalities, businesses, and institutions in Québec. The end goal is to guarantee a perfect water quality 100% of the time across the territory and for future generations.
