Feeding wild animals in the city is dangerous – for them and for you!
With the warm weather comes the return of small wild animals such as squirrels, raccoons, geese and ducks to our streets, parks and green spaces. You may be tempted to attract them with food so that you can look at them up close, but you absolutely must not yield to this temptation. Feeding these animals is a real threat to the survival of their species.
Here are some of the consequences:
- Feeding wild animals can make them more aggressive towards humans, as they lose their natural fear of people by associating humans with food. This can lead to attacks and bites.
- The food offered by humans can be bad for the animals’ health, as it may contain substances that are harmful to them.
- Feeding these animals can make them dependent on human food and prevent them from developing their foraging instincts.
- The abundant supply of food encourages overpopulation of species and leads to degradation of habitat and natural food resources.
So, it’s important to respect nature and let wild animals live in their natural environment. Remember: when animals stay in an environment, it’s because that environment provides them with everything they need!
