Fighting the emerald ash borer

Grants for property owners for the treatment or felling of ash trees

The City of Pointe-Claire wants to bring back the grant program implemented last year to help ash tree owners protect the trees by reimbursing them for up to 50% of the cost of preventive treatment or felling.

“These initiatives are designed to provide our citizens with financial support in order to preserve our urban forest and its benefits for our environment in addition to ensuring a safe environment for everyone,” says Mayor Trudeau.

There are 8,000 ash trees in Pointe-Claire at risk of being destroyed by the emerald ash borer, an insect from Asia that has been ravaging North America since the early 2000s.

For ash trees that qualify for preventive treatment, a grant equivalent to 50% of the cost of treatment is available, up to a maximum of $1,500 per address every two years. Preventive treatment with TreeAzin must be injected by professionals and is effective for two years. A special rate of $3.79 per centimetre of diameter is being offered to residence owners. The treatment period will continue until August 31. To receive treatment, residents must contact the Public Works Department by August 15 at the latest.

A grant is also being offered for the felling of ash trees that are too infected. The grant is equivalent to 50% of the cost of felling, up to $200 per tree measuring 25 cm or more in diameter. A permit is required and will be delivered free of charge so that the work can be done during the period when felling is permitted, between October 1 and March 14.

For more information or to make an appointment to have your ash trees inspected for preventive treatment or felling, please contact the Public Works Department at 514-630-1230, tp@pointe-claire.ca.
