Inauguration of the Olive-Urquhart Sports Centre

Today, the City of Pointe-Caire inaugurates the new Olive-Urquhart Sports Centre in the presence of the mayor of Pointe-Claire, Tim Thomas, members of City Council, Member of Parliament for Lac-Saint-Louis, Francis Scarpaleggia, Member of the National Assembly for Jacques-Cartier, Gregory Kelley, former mayor of Pointe-Claire, Bill McMurchie, Vice-President of Operations of the YMCAs of Québec, Eric Trudel, representatives, coaches and athletes from Pointe-Claire sports clubs, and City and YMCAs of Québec staff.

“I would like to highlight the remarkable work of our teams who carried out all the tasks required to open our new Sports Centre to the public despite the pandemic. I am proud of the quality of these new facilities, which will meet our population’s growing sports and recreation needs. I would also like to thank my predecessor, John Belvedere, who took steps to acquire this new municipal building to benefit our community,” said Mayor Thomas.

“It is imperative for us that the site’s community and sports DNA remain intact and that the centre continues to serve the community. Thanks to this partnership with the City of Pointe-Claire, of which we are very proud, our teams can devote themselves more than ever to maximizing the impact of the Y’s programs both on and off site, to transform even more lives in the communities of the West Island,” emphasizes the Vice-President of Operations of the YMCAs of Québec, Eric Trudel.

During this ceremony, a plaque summarizing the West Island YMCA’s community involvement was presented to Mr. Trudel.

“This new Sports Centre is an opportunity to pay tribute to Olive Urquhart, the first female mayor of Pointe-Claire and the second female mayor elected in the province of Québec. A great visionary, Ms. Urquhart has made a remarkable contribution to the development of Pointe-Claire. In addition to being the instigator of our industrial park, her numerous accomplishments throughout her mandates, from 1951 to 1961, helped enrich our living environment and made our city what it is today. With great gratitude, we named our Sports Centre, located at the entrance to our industrial park, in her memory,” concludes Mr. Thomas.

A historical mural installed in the centre of the building and recounting the highlights of Ms. Urquhart’s career as city councillor and mayor was unveiled during the inauguration to help the public discover her contributions to the community.

The Olive-Urquhart Sports Centre is located at 230 Brunswick Boulevard. Discover and participate in free activities during open house days until May 31 inclusively. For more information on the services offered at the Sports Centre, click here.
