Pointe-Claire, more inclusive than ever

Semaine québécoise des personnes handicapées

To mark the Semaine québécoise des personnes handicapées, the Mayor of the City of Pointe-Claire, John Belvedere, would like to highlight the City’s actions that make our facilities even more accessible for the entire community.

“We constantly strive to improve accessibility at all of our facilities in order to provide adapted access to our buildings and amenities for everyone to take full advantage of the activities we offer. I also encourage residents to share these values of inclusion and respect, which our community holds dear,” stated Mayor Belvedere.

As part of our vision to continually improve access, last year the City installed a second access ramp at the north entrance of City Hall, complete with an automatic door-opening system for easier use, as well as new accessible restrooms. Signs at City Hall and the Stewart Hall Cultural Centre were also updated to include Braille.

At the Aquatic Centre, the locker rooms were renovated to install a new handrail, making it safer to move between the locker rooms and the fitness rooms. A lift is also available for users to get in and out of the pool easily.

City employees were given targeted training in order to better assist residents who have specific needs.

Finally, in order to allow all children to take part in as many activities as possible, the City purchased an accessible bicycle to give all children a chance to travel together during Teen Camp activities.

An activity booklet was also created to teach children about inclusion and respecting differences. This booklet will once again be available this year at summer festivities and certain day camp activities.

“These actions help us offer an even more accessible environment and improve the everyday lives of people living with a disability,” said Mayor Belvedere in conclusion.
