Pointe-Claire to develop a Climate Plan as part of its ecological transition and resilience initiatives
The City of Pointe-Claire would like to inform residents that it will be developing a Climate Plan outlining the actions that it will take to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
The development and implementation of the Climate Plan is one of the objectives of the City’s Strategic Plan, which stipulates that collectively (City, citizens, businesses and institutions), we must work toward the reduction of our environmental footprint. This Plan will also define the priorities for achieving the various objectives related to ecological transition and resilience.
The Climate Plan will serve as a strategic framework for reducing the City’s greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating its transition to an increasingly carbon-neutral, green and resilient environment. This is consistent with the City’s efforts in recent years, which saw the implementation of several environmental initiatives, notably:
- Offering multiple waste collection options to limit landfill disposal
- Implementing naturalization projects and restoring riparian zones and green spaces
- Establishing an Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Committee
- Designing and implementing sponge parks
- Adopting a new by-law on the usage of drinking water
The Development of our Climate Plan
Eco-Nico: What exactly is a Climate Plan?
First, it allows Pointe-Claire to examine the environmental impacts of the activities, buildings, and infrastructure in the City, while also evaluating those coming from other sectors within the territory, including residents, businesses, industries and institutions. The Plan will also help us better understand and assess the natural infrastructures and climate risks linked to different climate hazards in our region. This breakdown allows us to then define and prioritize actions and strategies that help reduce our environmental impact, called our ecological footprint, and implement climate adaptation measures so that Pointe-Claire can become a resilient, inclusive, and carbon-neutral city. It also outlines actions that everyone can take on to meet the environmental goals of our Strategic Plan. |

In summary, the Climate Plan will guide our efforts for decarbonization (i.e. the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions), climate adaptation, and biodiversity protection on our territory. The goal of this Plan is to increase the community’s resilience to climate change by identifying ways to protect biodiversity, and the concrete actions aimed at decarbonization.
A major part of this Plan will be devoted to raising awareness, but also to getting citizens involved in achieving carbon neutrality. Everyone will be an integral part of the process.
The Next Steps
The first step of the Climate Plan involves defining the City’s carbon footprint and identifying the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions within the territory. This will set decarbonization and reduction goals, as well as outline key steps and strategies to put into action.
Since everyone has a role to play in ecological transition, the City will keep you informed of the progress and developments of this important project for our City.
