Pointe-Claire Village – Referendum on the creation of a Business Development Corporation

A referendum on the creation of a Business Development Corporation (BDC) will be held on October 22, 2017 in Pointe-Claire Village among merchants in the area.

City Council made this decision during a special meeting held at City Hall on August 29 in order to provide merchants in Pointe-Claire Village the opportunity to officially vote for or against the creation of a BDC.

“The referendum will give all owners of a business establishment in Pointe-Claire Village the chance to voice their opinion on this economic and business development project intended to encourage and support local initiatives,” said Mayor Morris Trudeau.

On August 1, some 33 merchants of the Village submitted a request to City Council for the creation of a corporation that would promote the commercial activities of the area in a structured and united manner.

A provincial law governs the launch of these organizations which, once created, involve mandatory membership. In this situation, the law requires that a register be kept to give those who oppose the creation of a BDC the chance to voice their opposition.

The register was open for signing on August 22, 2017 and, based on the number of businesses, 26 signatures out of 152 were needed to oppose the project and require a referendum to confirm the decision. Since there were 42 signatures, City Council decreed that a referendum would be held.

All Pointe-Claire Village merchants will be officially informed by the City of the steps to follow to be registered on the referendum list. Advance voting will take place on October 15 from noon to 8 p.m. and the referendum will be held on October 22 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Volunteer Rescue Unit, which is located at 2A Victoria Avenue in Pointe-Claire Village.

“In the interest of transparency, everyone is invited to express their viewpoint on the creation of a Business Development Corporation for the Village,” concluded Mayor Trudeau.
