Sanitary Sewer System Cleaning

The City of Pointe-Claire is currently undertaking a significant cleaning operation of the sanitary sewer system, which will continue until August 16, 2024. This initiative affects districts 1, 4, 6, and the western parts of districts 2, 5, 7.

Why is this cleaning necessary?

Each year, the city inspects the sewer system to ensure it is functioning properly. Depending on the inspection results, cleaning operations may be necessary. This operation is performed to prevent blockages and maintain a smooth flow of wastewater.

How is the cleaning performed?

It is carried out using a vacuum truck that employs a high-pressure water system to clean the pipes. The high-pressure water jet dislodges and removes accumulations of grease, debris, and other residues in the sewers, which could otherwise cause clogs and overflows. The vacuum truck injects high-pressure water through a specialized hose equipped with directional nozzles. This water, moving at high speed, creates a thorough cleaning effect by scraping the internal walls of the pipes without damaging the infrastructure. This process is not only effective but also environmentally friendly as it uses no chemicals.

What are the possible impacts?

The introduction of high-pressure water can cause temporary odours as well as gurgling noises and possible splashing in the sanitary facilities of residences and buildings connected to the network. Although these effects are temporary, they can be unpleasant. We recommend that residents keep toilet lids closed when not in use during the cleaning period.

What to do in case of a backup?

It is mandatory for all properties in Pointe-Claire to have a backwater valve to prevent sewage backups.

If a backwater valve is faulty or missing, the cleaning process may lead to a sewage backup. To prevent this inconvenience, it is crucial to ensure that your property is equipped with a functioning backwater valve. In case of a backup, we recommend that you immediately stop using all sanitary facilities and contact a plumbing professional.

If you are unsure about the presence or functionality of a backwater valve, we encourage you to contact a plumbing professional.

How to prevent clogging the sewers?

To ensure the proper functioning of our sanitary sewer network, we want to remind everyone of the importance of not disposing of certain items in toilets or sinks.

Wipes (even biodegradable ones), diapers, sanitary products, paper towels, as well as oils and fats, do not break down in the sewer system and are often the cause of clogs and backups. By adopting responsible practices and avoiding disposing of these items in sanitary facilities, you not only help prevent unpleasant problems but also reduce maintenance costs and ensure the efficiency of our sanitation systems.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
