Snow removal operations and winter parking rules
Given the forecasted snowfall, the City of Pointe-Claire would ask that you park your vehicles in your driveways overnight to facilitate snow removal operations.
To ensure everyone’s safety, we would like to remind you of the parking and snow removal rules in effect beginning November 15.
Parking
From November 15 to April 15 inclusively, overnight street parking is prohibited between midnight and 7 a.m. In exceptional circumstances, you can contact the Inspection – Public Security Department (514-630-1234) to obtain a temporary 24-hour permit. This permit may be renewed twice during the winter, weather permitting. During the day, parking is allowed on one side of the street, as indicated by signage.
Snow removal
When clearing snow from private driveways, residents are responsible for dumping the snow on their property. The following are violations of the City by-law:
- Piling snow in a way that obstructs drivers’ visibility, whether on public or private property
- Dumping snow within 1.5 m of a fire hydrant
- Dumping snow onto public property or the municipal right-of-way.
The time required to clear snow and spread abrasives on streets and sidewalks depends on weather conditions. Operations begin when there is an accumulation of approximately five centimetres of snow, and they are carried out in two steps: clearing, followed by removal. During these operations, we ask that residents minimize the amount of time their vehicles are parked on the street.
Clearing begins on major roads and school and hospital zones and then continues on smaller streets. These steps may be repeated depending on the amount and duration of the snowfall. Removal begins when snow has stopped falling and streets and sidewalks have been cleared.
Every effort is made to ensure that both motorists and pedestrians can get around safely. Cooperation is needed on the part of all residents to ensure quick and efficient snow removal throughout the city.
