Description
Charles Mingus is the master creator of a body of work that reflects, and even surpasses his personality: impulsive, multifaceted, and dedicated. It blends Afro-American tradition (blues, gospel), the vibrant swing of Duke Ellington, and the elements of bebop. His eclectic, open, and free style approach traverses all the major currents of jazz.
EnsembleNormand Guilbeault: Tribute to Mingus may well be the first Quebec musician to have demonstrated a profound appreciation for the influence of Charles Mingus. Guilbeault has dedicated himself to deciphering and decoding the beauty and mystery of Mingus's work, to whom he pays tribute here with his six-piece ensemble.
Mathieu Bélanger, clarinet/bass clarinet; Jean Derome, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, flute; Ivanhoe Jolicoeur, trumpet, flugelhorn; Alexandre Grogg, piano; Normand Guilbeault, double bass; Claude Lavergne, drums
