Although it’s not as well known, plasma donation is just as important as blood donation. And since plasma regenerates quickly, it can be donated more often—as often as every six days!
What is Plasma?
Plasma is the liquid, golden-coloured component of blood that contains many vital components.
Among other things, plasma contains proteins that are used to produce drugs that are vital for the treatment of many diseases. There is an ever-growing need for this one-of-a-kind resource.
The most effective and optimal way to collect plasma is through a plasma donation using a technique called “apheresis,” in which blood passes through a machine that collects only the plasma and returns the other blood components to the donor. This technique makes it possible to collect two to three times more plasma than through a whole blood donation.
Donating plasma takes about 45 minutes. You can expect to spend about an hour at the donation site for the entire donation process.
