It is forbidden to excessively prune or cut down a tree with a diameter of more than 10 cm (4 inches), measured at 1 meter (3.3 feet) from the ground, except in the following cases and after obtaining a permit from the City:
- The tree is dead or will be within a year;
- An analysis by an arboriculture expert concludes that the tree is infested by an incurable insect or disease and poses a risk of infestation and epidemic to others;
- The tree poses a danger to people or property due to the risk of falling, to the extent that proper pruning or bracing cannot make the tree safe;
Any tree with a diameter of 10 cm (4 inches) that is cut down must be replaced by a new tree within the year following the issuance of the tree cutting authorization certificate.
To cut down a damaged private tree, a permit application must be submitted to the City. Authorization must be obtained before beginning the work or hiring a contractor. Throughout the city's territory, every tree must be preserved and maintained to extend its lifespan.
