Emergency situation

The City of Pointe-Claire reminds you that it is important to prepare to be able to deal with possible emergency situations or natural disasters.

Are you ready in case of an emergency?

It is up to you to perform the initial actions that will be crucial to ensure your own safety and that of your family, while waiting for rescue teams to assist you. Remember, you are the first person responsible for your safety!

What can you do?

1. Identify the risks

To be well-prepared, you need to know the potential risks you might face.

In Pointe-Claire, as everywhere across Quebec, we are exposed to a range of risks: accidents involving hazardous materials, contamination or shortage of drinking water, fire, flooding, power outage, earthquake, strong winds, etc.

2. Prepare a plan

Preparing a personalized emergency plan will help you take appropriate actions in case of an emergency.

Your plan will be very useful in an emergency! Take a few minutes to prepare it.

Elements to consider:

  • safe exits from the house and transit routes in your neighborhood
  • gathering places
  • resource persons
  • health and insurance information
  • a place to accommodate your pet
  • emergency contact information
  • location of your fire extinguisher, water and gas inlets, electrical panel, and floor drain

3. Have an emergency kit

Prepare to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. This period corresponds to the time required to restore interrupted public services or the time it might take for rescue teams to assist you.

Prepare some essential items to meet your basic needs during this period. Remember that you might have to manage without a power source or running water.

Recommended basic emergency kit:

  • drinking water – two liters per person per day, for at least three days;
  • non-perishable food – supplies for at least three days;
  • manual can opener
  • flashlight with spare batteries
  • battery-powered radio with spare batteries
  • first aid kit and medications
  • candles
  • lighter and matches

In case of evacuation from your home, the following items could be very useful:

  • medications and list of medications
  • hygiene items – toothbrush, towel, soap, toilet paper, garbage bags
  • change of clothes and blankets
  • extra keys for the car and house
  • cash and coins
  • important personal papers, including photocopies of your identification

Tip: pack these items in advance in a bag or bin.
