Targeted Management Zone

Targeted management is a sustainable development practice. Find out more about this ecological practice that enhances biodiversity and ensures the integration of native plants into our ecosystems.

Have you ever noticed a municipal lot that seems almost abandoned because it has turned so green? Don’t worry! This choice is part of an ecological project by the City of Pointe-Claire to encourage more environmentally friendly practices and promote biodiversity. This is what is known as targeted management.

What is Targeted Management?

Targeted management aims to reduce human intervention in certain green spaces in order to encourage the spontaneous flowering of plant species better adapted to the soil and climate, while protecting biodiversity.

In 2023, the City of Pointe-Claire launched a natural garden project on a portion of the green space located at the corner of Drake Avenue and Saint-Jean Boulevard, near the police station (PDQ5). There is no mowing in this zone. Instead, a mix of native and melliferous plants was planted to encourage greater biodiversity. These plants attract essential pollinating insects, such as bees and butterflies, to contribute to the health of local ecosystems.

The Dandelion Challenge

In 2024, the City of Pointe-Claire joined a 100% Quebec environmental initiative: the Dandelion Challenge. Launched by Miel&Co. in 2021, this movement aims to raise awareness of the importance of pollinating insects to our ecosystem.

Organizations, residents and the City of Pointe-Claire are invited to delay mowing their lawns to allow dandelions to bloom and offer nectar and pollen to bees. These small gestures help to support insects that are essential to biodiversity.

In spring 2025, nine municipal green spaces suspended mowing to allow this bright yellow flower to flourish.

What are the Benefits?

  • Protects biodiversity by attracting pollinating insects and creating wildlife habitats;
  • Reduces ambient temperature;
  • Diversifies and revitalizes the landscape;
  • Limits artificialization and the use of pesticides by encouraging the natural expression of flora;
  • Controls certain pests, such as ragweed;
  • Contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
