SubjectDetails

Environmentally Friendly Lawn Care

Discover environmental practices that can improve the health of your lawn. Here are some interesting practices:

Keep your lawn slightly longer than usual, preferably between 8 and 10 cm; this will prevent it from being infested with weeds and reduce its vulnerability to pests.

Reduce your use of fertilizers by overseeding, adding a layer of soil, practising grasscycling, and aerating your lawn.

Encourage biodiversity by planting eco-friendly lawn alternatives, such as clover and thyme.

Urban Forestry and Canopy

Planting trees on your property can beautify the landscape, improve air quality, reduce the heat island effect, and increase carbon capture and storage levels. When planting trees in urban areas, it is important to consider the following:

Tree species selection: To select the most appropriate tree species, please contact us. We can assist you during the selection process, considering the specific conditions of your yard (such as available space and the amount of light your yard receives).

Tree planting: When planting a tree on your property, you must follow certain best practices: dig a hole twice as wide as the base of the new tree, use mulch to keep the soil moist and protect the roots, and create a soil ring around the new tree to ensure the roots have enough water.

Proper maintenance after planting: Basic steps to care for a newly planted tree include frequent watering, adding organic mulch (grass clippings, wood chips, compost, etc.), and adding a stake next to the tree during the first or first two years of its life.

Unwanted Wildlife

It is the responsibility of each homeowner to hire a private company for the removal of unwanted mice, groundhogs, squirrels, skunks, or raccoons established on their property. However, we can recommend some simple strategies to get rid of these unwanted visitors, such as applying natural animal repellents (Cayenne pepper, black pepper, Epsom salts, etc.) on the most visited areas and burrows.

Harmful and Invasive Plants

It is the responsibility of each homeowner to hire a private company to treat infestations of harmful plants such as poison sumac, buckthorn, or weeds on their property. However, we can recommend some strategies to get rid of invasive and harmful plants, such as manual removal or using certain biopesticides. It is important to note that the use of certain pesticides requires a temporary permit issued by the Public Works Department (see section III of by-law PC-2865: Pesticide Use By-law on the Territory of the City of Pointe-Claire).

Attracting Pollinators to Your Garden

Without pollinators, our breakfasts would lack key ingredients like coffee, fruits, and honey. Pollinators are essential in an urban environment because they contribute to maintaining a rich and dynamic biodiversity and allow for the production of food crops. Here are some examples of plants that will attract pollinators to your garden:

  • Thyme
  • Chives
  • Lavender
  • Echinacea
  • Milkweed
  • Daisy
  • Bee balm

Reducing Individual Water Consumption

By reducing our water consumption, we protect and conserve this collective resource. Pointe-Claire recently adopted a by-law regarding the consumption of drinking water (PC-2974), which has been in effect since June 2024. We recommend various ways to reduce your individual water consumption. You can, among other things:

Collect rainwater in rainwater barrels for different uses. They are offered at a low cost to the citizens of Pointe-Claire.

Choose plants that are well adapted to periods of drought.

Build a rain garden.

Save water by applying environmentally friendly lawn care practices, such as grasscycling.
