Consumption of Drinking Water

What can I do to reduce my water consumption? Here is information on drinking water usage.

Drinking water is a precious and limited resource. Although we live in a country where water is abundant, it is crucial to understand that this resource is not infinite. Reducing our consumption of drinking water has many benefits, both for the environment and for our community. Here’s why it’s important to reduce our consumption of drinking water, and some practical advice on how to go about it.

Why reduce our consumption of drinking water?

  • To preserve natural resources: Only 2.5% of the Earth’s total water is freshwater, and much of this is trapped in glaciers and polar ice caps. By reducing our consumption, we are helping to preserve these limited resources for future generations.
  • To reduce the ecological footprint: It takes a considerable amount of energy to treat and distribute drinking water. By using less water, we also reduce our carbon footprint, helping to combat climate change.
  • To save money: Reducing our water consumption can also mean savings on our water bills. The less water we use, the less we pay, which is good for our wallet.
  • To protect ecosystems: Excessive water consumption can lead to overexploitation of natural water sources, endangering aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity. By using water responsibly, we help to protect these vital habitats.

Tips for reducing drinking water consumption

  • Repair leaks: Even a slight water leak can waste thousands of litres of water a year. Check your taps, toilets and pipes regularly for leaks and repair them. “A drop of water escaping from a tap every second represents 1 litre of water per hour, which is equivalent to 9,540 litres of water per year. Often, simply replacing the sealing washer is enough to solve the problem.”
  • Install water-saving devices: Low-flow showerheads, dual-flush toilets and faucet aerators are simple-to-install devices that can significantly reduce your water consumption.
  • Adopt responsible consumption habits: Take shorter showers, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing dishes, and use a bucket to wash your car instead of a hose.
  • Use native plants in the garden: Native plants are adapted to the local climate and require less water to survive. By choosing drought-resistant plants, you can reduce the amount of water needed to maintain your garden.
  • Collect rainwater: Install a rainwater harvesting system to water your plants and garden. This reduces the need to use drinking water for tasks that can be done with non-potable water. It is possible to obtain a Rain barrel at low cost at City Hall.
  • Educate and raise awareness: Share your knowledge of the importance of water conservation with your family, friends and community. The more of us who adopt responsible practices, the greater our impact.

By-Law

Visit our water usage by-law page

In June 2024, to promote the sound management and responsible consumption of drinking water, the City of Pointe-Claire adopted the By-Law Concerning the Use of Drinking Water. This aligns with the orientations of the 2023-2030 Strategic Plan by implementing concrete actions to accelerate the ecological transition of Pointe-Claire and the community. To find out more about the conditions of the by-law and the related penalties, visit the Water Regulation page.

Reducing our consumption of drinking water is a shared responsibility that benefits both the environment and our community. By adopting simple gestures and raising awareness among those around us, we can all contribute to preserving this precious resource. Together, let's make every drop count!
