Halloween: Safety First !

News
Published on October 31, 2025 to 10:55 a.m.

As the streets get ready to fill with ghosts, goblins and ghouls on the hunt for sweet treats, the City of Pointe-Claire would like to remind you to stay alert this Friday evening to ensure a safe Halloween for everyone.

Here are a few safety tips for a fun and hazard-free night:

  • Bring a flashlight or wear reflective accessories to make sure you and your costume stand out.

  • Make sure your child’s costume is not too long to avoid tripping or any accidents.

  • Favour face paint over masks, as they can reduce visibility and make walking difficult.

  • Choose costumes made of non-flammable fabrics. Some decorative pumpkins are still lit with real flames.

  • Follow the rules of the road:

    • Only cross at crosswalks and always stay on the sidewalk.

    • Stick to one side of the street at a time to limit crossings.

  • Knock on doors in a group and stay outside the homes when collecting treats.

  • Plan a familiar, safe route and avoid streets that are too busy or poorly lit.

  • Check all treats that you collect to make sure they are safe to eat.

  • If you are driving, slow down and be extra cautious. Watch out for groups of little monsters crossing.

  • Be especially careful in work zones: traffic may be reversed, and some obstacles (trenches, pipes, materials) may be harder to see in the dark.

An Accessible Halloween

If you are handing out treats, Allergies Québec suggests displaying a teal pumpkin to show that you are offering allergen-free treats or non-food items such as stickers, toys or decorated pencils.

We encourage you to create a more accessible and safer environment by providing children with barrier-free access

The Pointe-Claire Volunteer Rescue Unit will be mobilized in collaboration with our Inspection – Public Security Department to ensure the evening runs smoothly.

A wonderful way to let all little costumed monsters and witches enjoy the night to the fullest and safely!

Happy Halloween!
