New Water By-Law: What You Need to Know and Tools for Sustainable Consumption

News
Published on July 7, 2025 to 3:30 p.m.

Last summer, the City of Pointe-Claire adopted a by-law on the use of drinking water and granted a one-year grace period before its implementation. This allowed residents to become familiar with the by-law and adopt sustainable water usage habits.

As this grace period has now ended, the City will begin enforcing the penalties associated with the by-law. Inspectors will be engaging with residents to raise awareness about the importance of reducing water consumption.

Please note that failure to comply with the by-law’s requirements may result in financial penalties. Visit our Water Usage By-law page to learn more about the by-law and how to comply with it.

Tools and Water Reduction Initiatives

The City offers several water-saving tools to help residents save water and adopt sustainable usage practices. Among these tools are the following:

Water Saving Kits

The City is distributing water-saving kits, free of charge, to residents of Pointe-Claire.

What is included in each water-saving kit?

Each kit includes a low-flow showerhead, low-flow sink aerators, leak detection tablets, and Teflon tape. It also comes with a toilet tank bank to help reduce water use in older-style toilets.

Come pick up your water saving kit at City Hall as of tomorrow, July 8, at 10 a.m.! (While supplies last, MULTI card required, one kit per household).

Rain Gauges

The City also distributes rain gauges, free of charge, as another way to help residents reduce their water consumption.

How does a rain gauge work?

A rain gauge measures the amount of rainfall in a given area, helping residents monitor how much water their lawn and plants have received to avoid overwatering.

Place the rain gauge in an open area, away from trees or buildings, to ensure accurate rainfall measurement.

Come pick up your rain gauge at City Hall as of tomorrow, July 8, at 10 a.m.! (While supplies last, MULTI card required, one per household).

Rainwater Barrel

Pointe-Claire also offers a rainwater recovery barrel with a capacity of up to 208 litres to help reduce the use of potable water.

These barrels provide an alternative water source during droughts or watering restriction periods, giving you access to untreated water for tasks like washing your car or watering your lawn and your flower beds.

The rain barrels are available at City Hall at the cost of 43$ per barrel.
