Protecting Our Shorelines: The Importance of Not Cutting the Vegetation Near the Shoreline

A recent unauthorized cutting of trees and shrubs was reported in a municipal green space along Bord-du-Lac–Lakeshore Road. The City of Pointe-Claire reminds residents that such actions are prohibited under current regulations and may result in penalties. 

Trees, shrubs and vegetation along the waterfront play a vital role in maintaining the health of our waterways and environment; it is therefore essential to protect them and to adopt proper shoreline practices.

Why is it important to preserve shoreline vegetation?

Trees, shrubs and vegetation along the water’s edge provide essential benefits:

• They help prevent shoreline erosion.
• They naturally filter pollutants before they reach the water.
• They provide habitat for a wide variety of fish, birds, and other species.
• They contribute to water quality and help maintain healthy ecosystems.

The regulations 

The cutting of trees, shrubs and/or vegetation along shorelines is strictly regulated under the Environmental Quality Act (LQE). All interventions must comply with current regulations. 
Significant fines can be imposed by the Ministry of the Environment (MELCCFP) and the City of Pointe-Claire in the case of violations.
