Removal of Non-Compliant Stop Signs in the City of Pointe-Claire

News
Published on July 9, 2025 to 4:29 p.m.

The City of Pointe-Claire would like to inform you that approximately 10 stop signs throughout the city will be removed, as they have been deemed non-compliant with current regulations. This decision follows directives from both the Police Department and the Government of Québec.

The operation is scheduled to begin the week of July 9, 2025, with the installation of a notice at each affected location, indicating that the stop sign will be removed in 30 days. The stop signs are expected to be taken down during the week of August 10.

As stipulated in the Highway code: “The “Arrêt” sign indicates that vehicles are required to stop at an intersection. It must not be used for the sole purpose of slowing down traffic.” Therefore, the City has a legal obligation to ensure that the road signage in place conforms to the Highway Safety Code and Volume V of the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable. The removal of non-compliant stop signs is also an important preventive measure to maintain the integrity of road signage and protect all road users.

Some of the removed stop signs will be replaced with alternative traffic control measures, such as pedestrian crossings or warning signs, to ensure that the area remains safe and secure for road users in residential areas.
