Cedar Park Heights Park Woodland Restoration
The City of Pointe-Claire will begin, in July, work to eradicate buckthorn from the wooded area of Cedar Park Heights Park. The work will continue until late fall.
Over the coming weeks, crews will manually remove buckthorn stems and cover the remaining stumps with a membrane to prevent regrowth over the next five years. During this period, the woodland may appear less dense. This is a normal and necessary step to ensure the eradication of this invasive plant, encourage forest regeneration, and preserve this natural environment over the long term.
New native trees and shrubs adapted to the site conditions will be planted in the treated areas in the fall, following the completion of the work. The diversity of species will contribute to the development of a healthy urban forest and the natural restoration of the site.
The Cedar Park Heights Park woodland has been weakened by the emerald ash borer, an insect responsible for the loss of many ash trees. This situation has contributed to the spread of buckthorn, an invasive alien plant that grows rapidly, takes over available space, and replaces native trees, shrubs, and plants, thereby hindering the natural regeneration of the forest.
