Door-to-Door Solicitation and Peddling

A peddler is ringing your doorbell? Door-to-door solicitation in Pointe-Claire is regulated.

Mandatory Peddling Permit

Anyone soliciting, selling goods or services door-to-door in Pointe-Claire must have a valid peddling permit issued by the City. This requirement is in place to protect residents.

These individuals are only allowed to knock on your door from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. If you are solicited outside of these hours, you may contact our Inspection Department - public safety

Your Safety First: Important Tips

Some individuals may come to your door to sell products or services. It’s important to stay cautious in such situations.

  • You are under no obligation to open your door to a solicitor.
  • If you choose to open it, make sure the person is authorized to carry out their activities. Always ask them to show their peddling permit.
  • Be wary if the person cannot show this permit or seems hesitant. You have the right to deny access to your property.
  • If the person becomes insistent or the situation seems suspicious, contact our Inspection Department - public safety or the police department immediately.

Who Can Knock on Your Door Without a Permit?

Some individuals are allowed to go door-to-door without a permit:

  • Election candidates or volunteers during an election period, who may be collecting signatures or presenting their platform. No permit is required for this type of activity.
  • Film production companies: To film in a neighborhood, crews must obtain consent from the residents. They may knock on your door to ask for your authorization.

How to Recognize a City Employee

Some individuals may identify themselves as City employees when accessing your property.

City of Pointe-Claire employees will never try to sell you anything. Their visit is always for official reasons, such as checking water meters. Here's how to recognize them:

  • They wear a City uniform.
  • They carry an employee ID card with a photo.
  • Their vehicle has the City’s colors and logo.
