Cycling network

Do you want to go for a bike ride with your family? Do you use the bicycle as a means of transport ? Here is all the information about the cycling network in the Pointe-Claire area.

As part of its commitment to active mobility, the City of Pointe-Claire is working on expanding and developing its cycling network for the years to come. To date, Pointe-Claire has more than 20 km of bike paths, integrating into the vast 1,065 km network of the City of Montreal. Enthusiasts of active transportation and lovers of bike rides can explore the City while enjoying its varied and attractive landscapes.

Note that several paths in the cycling network are multi-purpose paths, meaning they are shared between cyclists, pedestrians, skateboarders (skateboards), and all other trail users.

Types of Bike Lanes in Pointe-Claire

The City has three types of cycling facilities within its active transportation network.

Multi-use path

A multi-use path is a designated route that can be used by different types of users, such as cyclists, pedestrians, skaters, people on scooters, and wheelchair users. It is part of the cycling network and allows for safe and pleasant travel throughout the area.

Speed limit on the street is 50 km/h or higher.

Separated bike path

A separated bike path is a two-way lane reserved for cyclists, located off the roadway and running parallel to a pedestrian path.

On-street bike lane

An on-street bike lane is a portion of the roadway reserved exclusively for cyclists. It is marked with painted lines and symbols on the pavement and allows cyclists to travel more safely while sharing the street with motor vehicles.

Speed limit is 50 km/h or lower.

Designated roadway

A designated roadway is a street where cyclists and motorists share the road at low traffic volumes, without a reserved lane. Signage and street design encourage safe coexistence among all users.

Speed limit is 30 km/h.

Repair station

A bike repair station is installed along the bike path running along Hymus Boulevard, near Saint-Jean Boulevard. It allows cyclists to make basic adjustments and repairs on the go.

Share the road!

Drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, sharing the road is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of all users. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring that traffic flows smoothly and safely.

As a cyclist, make sure you are visible on the road by wearing fluorescent-colored clothing or with reflective strips. At nightfall or in low light conditions, equip yourself with a headlight or a white light at the front, a red light at the back, as well as reflectors on your wheels (front and rear) and on your pedals. To know all the details and comply with road regulations, we invite you to consult the SAAQ's webpage Bicycles and equipment: visibility and safety.

It is essential to respect traffic lights, stop signs, and right-of-way rules. Cyclists as well as drivers can receive fines. Before crossing an intersection or making a maneuver, make sure you are well seen by other road users. To do this, establish eye contact to confirm that they have spotted you and understand your intentions.
