Description

The studio has always been the preferred space for artistic creation. Versatile, it is equally a refuge, a laboratory, a storage, and a place of celebration. The studio is the first space the artist seeks to establish themselves, the space where their questions, apprehensions, and inspirations are channelled, expressed, and resolved. The Montreal painting Triennial Pictura pays homage to this vibrant space in a city where artists have always converged.

This exhibition takes its title from the flagship text by Daniel Buren The Function of the Studio (1979) in which he claims that among those frameworks that “create” artworks, the one that is spoken about the least but that is the first to surround and condition the work is the artist’s studio.

In L’Atelier 101, the works of artists Maude Deslauriers, Karine Fréchette, Zoe Koke, CP Simonise, Jessica Wee, and Jinny Yu relate to the different ways of seeing colour, viewing devices and visual distortions, and natural and artificial elements that influence our gaze.
