Why Reduction at Source is Important

Even before recycling comes into play, the biggest win happens at the source. Adopt a few simple everyday habits to reduce your waste before it’s even created.

Being a true Bin Pro isn’t just about sorting right at the bin; it’s about making smart choices from the start whether at the store, at home and in everyday routines.

Through simple, practical moves like buying smart, sharing more, fixing what you have, donating extras, and keeping food scraps out of the garbage, we can help to cut waste, lower emissions, and protect natural resources. This is how the game-winning power of reducing at the source comes into play.

The Bin Team has the playbook, but it is the Pointe-Claire residents who make the winning moves. Reducing at the source is a small action that minimizes resources, builds community spirit and keep waste out of the garbage. Why does the home crowd need to get in on it? Because the more players on the field playing smart, the bigger the resources saved and the bigger the victory for the environment.

6 Simple Ways to Reduce Waste

The Bin Team is passing the ball to you! Here are six game moves to reduce waste, help lower emissions, preserve natural resources, and send less to the landfill:

1.    Buy smart, play smart
Choose products with less packaging or in bulk, as fewer wrappers means fewer fouls at the bin.

2.    Bring your own gear
Every day is game day! Whether your going shopping or to work, up your performance by bringing your own equipment like reusable water bottles, cloth bags, and food containers.

3.    Plan your meals
Make a shopping list, prep meals, and avoid impulse buys. When you plan, you waste less, and you’re always ready for the next game. Learn more about food waste.

4.    Share the love
Borrow, lend, or swap items with friends and neighbours.  Or, instead of buying new items, why not rent what you need, whether it’s tools, clothing, extra tables, or sports equipment!  Sharing gear or clothes is like passing the ball for the winning goal: we all benefit. What’s more, the Pointe-Claire Public Library - Central also offers a wide range of items you can borrow, a great way to consume differently.

5.    Fix before you bench
Repair a broken item instead of tossing them is the ultimate medley. A restored pair of shoes, handbag or a fixed toaster kept out of municipal waste is awarded as Player of Game.

6.    Donate your extras
When something still works, and in good condition, give it new life by donating it. That’s a clean assist that will help someone else and to give your treasures a second life. Find donation centres and reuse organizations.

Each of these easy-to-do plays adds up to reduce garbage at the source. That’s the kind of teamwork that wins for the environment. Be a Bin Pro, play smart, sort right, and let’s win together.
