An Innovative Partnership to Improve Stormwater Management

News
Published on May 28, 2025 to 9:04 a.m.

The City of Pointe-Claire is proud to announce a collaboration with the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) through the Institut AdapT, a research centre specializing in resilient and responsible infrastructures. Together, they are developing a city-wide Stormwater Management Plan (SMP) to help Pointe-Claire better cope with the effects of climate change.

This project will enable City teams to benefit from the expertise of ÉTS professor Jean-Luc Martel and Maxime Lachapelle, a student working on his master’s degree. Their goal is to offer an efficient, sustainable way to manage stormwater.

Why is this project important for Pointe-Claire residents?

This plan will allow us to:

  • Identify the areas most at risk in the event of heavy rain;
  • Plan ahead to avoid costly emergencies;
  • Reduce the risk of flooding and property damage;
  • Improve safety and quality of life in neighbourhoods;
  • Add more draining green infrastructure for better water absorption;
  • Integrate these solutions into the City’s annual work schedule.

A forward-looking project

This plan is part of Pointe-Claire’s commitment to becoming a greener, more resilient city. It includes the addition of natural solutions, such as:

  • Rain gardens,
  • Bioswales,
  • Permeable pavements,
  • More plantings.

These elements will be integrated into future development projects, in line with the 2023–2030 Strategic Plan. This partnership also allows us to see if we can implement new approaches or innovative ideas in our own ways.

A model for the whole country

In addition to helping Pointe-Claire, this project may also inspire other Canadian cities facing similar challenges. It will enable the sharing of best practices in stormwater management across the country.

The final plan will be ready by summer 2026. In the meantime, public meetings will be organized to inform citizens and invite them to take part in this process.
