Discoloured Water

Tap water can sometimes take on a white, gray, yellow, brown or orange color. This can be caused by a number of factors.

Why is my water discoloured?

Water discolouration is the result of the movement of minerals naturally present in water. These minerals detach from the internal walls of a pipe when there is a change in pressure or flow.

Some types of work may result in coloured water:

  • Manipulation of valves in the water system;
  • Work on pipes (flushing, repair or replacement);
  • Hydrant inspection.

Recommendations

  • Let the cold water run for a few minutes (around 10 to 15 minutes) until it is clear before using.
  • Make sure the water is colourless before washing to avoid staining clothes.

The City of Montréal regularly analyzes water samples in Pointe-Claire to ensure that the results obtained at the drinking water production plant are confirmed throughout the territory`s water network.

Unless otherwise specified, the water is still potable.

Whitish water

The water that comes out of your tap can sometimes have an opaque, whitish appearance. This is because air bubbles can form in the pipes, especially in cold weather. These air bubbles are harmless.
Just let the tap water run for a minute or two or let your glass of water stand for a few moments, and the water will become clear again.

Unless otherwise specified, the water is still potable.
