House Pierre-Demers (House Portelance)

42 Sainte-Anne Avenue – Construction around 1848

The Pierre-Demers house was built from fieldstones sourced from nearby quarries. Its history begins in 1847 when Pierre Demers buys an empty lot on which he builds a house and a forge. In 1866, the house, the blacksmith's shop, and the stable are sold to Pierre, an iron merchant from Montreal and son of Pierre Demers.

Many years later, the new owner, Stanislas Portelance, uses the stable to manufacture carriages and truck boxes. In 1944, the Portelance family adds dormers on each side of the roof. At the time, the forge is located on the north side while the stable is situated at the back of the house. The yard where the blacksmith shoes the horses is so narrow that it is only possible to shoe the animals one side at a time.

Sold by the Portelance family in 1985, the Pierre-Demers house has since been a restaurant that contributes to the fame of the Village of Pointe-Claire.
