Instructions for Collections

How to Place Bins and Containers

Your wheeled bin, containers, leaf bags (during leaf collections), bulky items, and upholstered items must be placed in your driveway, at the edge of the public road, after 6 p.m. the night before or before 7 a.m. on the day of collection.

The wheels and handles of the wheeled bin should be facing your residence.

A space of 30 cm (1 ft) must be maintained around the bin or 45 cm (1.5 ft) if it is a container.

After Collection

Your bins must be removed by 10 p.m. on the day of collection. Outside of collection day, the bin should be stored where it is least visible from the street and least disruptive to neighbouring properties.

Guidelines to Ensure Proper Winter Collection of Your Bins

Winter conditions can make waste collection more challenging. Snow, ice, and cold temperatures can interfere with proper pickup. Here’s how you can help prevent issues!

Keep Your Bins Outdoors

In winter, cold temperatures, snow, and freezing rain can cause the contents of bins to freeze, making collection more difficult for crews.

To prevent freezing, it is recommended that bins be kept outdoors at all times. Moving bins back and forth between indoors and outdoors creates moisture and condensation, which can cause the contents to freeze inside the bin and prevent it from being fully emptied during collection.

If you must store your bins indoors, please place them outside only on the morning of collection to limit moisture buildup and reduce the risk of freezing.

Ensure Safe Access to Your Bins

Bins that are not easily accessible may not be collected.

When placing your bin at the curb:

  • Clear snow around the bin to make it easily accessible.
  • Make sure the lid can open fully.
  • In icy conditions, spread sand or salt around the bins to ensure the safety of collection crews.

Prevent Organic Waste from Freezing

In cold weather, organic waste tends to stick together and to the sides of the bin, which can prevent proper collection.

To help ensure your green bin is collected:

  • Avoid placing overly liquid or unpackaged materials in the bin.
  • Place a piece of cardboard or newspaper at the bottom of the bin and use a dry paper bag. By absorbing moisture, this helps prevent materials from sticking to the bottom.
  • Please note that plastic bags, including those labelled biodegradable or compostable, are not accepted in the organic waste collection.
