How to place bins and containers

  • Your bins must be placed at the end of your driveway, close to the public thoroughfare, after 6 p.m. the day before or before 7 a.m. on collection day.
  • The wheels and handles of the wheeled bin must face your home.
  • A space of 30 cm (1 foot) must be left around the bin and between the bins, as well as 45 cm for containers.

After collection, your bins must be removed no later than 10 p.m. on the day of collection. Outside of collection day, the bin must be stored where it will be least visible from the street and least disruptive to neighbouring properties.

Instructions

IMPORTANT – Bins provided by the City for organic materials and recyclables cannot be used for domestic waste collection. By-law PC-2864

Citizens are responsible for obtaining a container or bin for this collection. We recommend that the bin be grey or black. It should not be blue, green or brown. The bin must be a European grip, not an American one.

Only household waste placed in a closed container or wheeled bin is collected. Bulky items are not accepted for this collection (anything too big to fit in a garbage can), except sofas and armchairs. Electronic appliances, halocarbons (e.g. refrigerators), tires and construction materials will not be accepted. You can take them to an Ecocentre.

  • It is important that these items not be placed too close to your bin. A space of 30 cm (1 ft.) must be left all around the bin to allow it to be picked up mechanically.
  • The weight of each item must not exceed 220 lb (100 kg), and the maximum dimensions are 1.8 m (6 ft) by 1.2 m (4 ft).
