Inventory of garter snakes as part of an environmental impact study

The City of Pointe-Claire wishes to inform you that as part of the environmental impact study preceding the stabilization work on the shoreline of Lake Saint-Louis, a garter snake inventory will be carried out in May and June 2024. This inventory will document the diversity of the fauna and identify the presence of certain endangered species such as the Dekay’s brownsnake, a species that is harmless to humans.

Should this species be present, it will be essential to implement mitigation measures during the construction period to ensure its survival. To this end, 35 artificial shelters (consisting of two overlapping asphalt shingles) will be strategically placed to attract the snakes and provide them with a safe habitat. A team of biologists will observe these shelters regularly to identify and count the reptiles.

We ask you to leave the shelters in place during the survey to avoid disturbing the snakes and skewing the survey results.
