December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities

This day with the theme of “Mieux accueillir les personnes handicapées : prenez part au changement !” (Better welcoming people with disabilities: be part of the change!) reminds us of the importance of offering services adapted to citizens with disabilities.

The City of Pointe-Claire is pleased to be able to count on the members of the Accessibility Committee, who propose concrete solutions that support the City in its efforts to adapt the facilities. The City also wishes to remind its citizens about the importance of respecting reserved spaces, especially in parking lots, parks and sports facilities.

Below are some actions that have been implemented this year to better serve people with disabilities, while supporting accessibility and inclusion:

  • Facilitated access to Council meeting, online closed captioning and making hearing aids available for people in the meeting room;
  • Integrated an accessibility settings tool on the website that allows people to adjust the site according to their accessibility profile;
  • Five bilingual activity kits are offered at the Central Library for people living with cognitive disorders;
  • Installed adapted tables in the City’s parks and green spaces;
  • Offered sports and leisure programming at the Olive-Urquhart Sports Centre, which is accessible and added adaptive equipment in the cardio room;
  • Installed accessible showers and wall seats in the Aquatic Centre changing rooms ;
  • Installed accessible play structures in Valois Park.

Remember that the City is a partner organization of the Companion Leisure Card (CAL) for all its programs and activities. Offered throughout the year, the free pass allows the accompanying person to participate free of charge in the activities in which the person with a disability is taking part.
