Programs for children and teens

2

June 25 to August 16
(8 weeks)

Olympic Way Swimming Lessons

Children under 12 years old must be accompanied at all times. They cannot be left unsupervised if a parent is participating in a class with another child.

Non-swimmers learn to swim using a swimming aid, which allows them to spend more time swimming. As they progress through the eight swimming levels, they become proficient at the four competitive swim strokes.

Tuesdays: June 25 – August 13 or Thursdays: June 27 – August 15

It is very important that children be registered in the correct level of our Olympic Way swimming lessons program, so please choose the level carefully when registering. You can determine which is the appropriate level by referring to the skills and endurance required to pass each level (White to Gold). Children who register in the wrong level will be removed from the class in order to preserve the integrity of our program. We cannot guarantee that another spot will be offered instead, in which case a refund or account credit will be issued.

30 minute lesson, once per week.

Windmills Swim (Ages 9 to 16)

Not offered in the summer session.

Two programs are available: a Junior (9-13 years) and a Senior (12-16 years) non-competitive swim program with the goal of perfecting strokes, learning some elementary racing techniques and increasing fitness.

Introduction to Aquatic Activities (Ages 11 to 14)

Not offered in the summer session.

Prerequisite: Completed Bronze level of swimming

Learn about different aquatic activities, all while having fun. Participants will try different aquatic sports and activities such as intertube water polo, water basketball, diving, aquafit, lifesaving, water volleyball, etc.

Learn to Dive (Ages 5 to 15)

Not offered in the summer session.

Prerequisite: Completed Green swim level

The Learn to Dive Program is divided into eight diving levels, from beginners to advanced. The five compulsory dives (front dive, back dive, reverse dive, inward dive and half twist) are introduced in a progressive series. A child must master every skill at each level before progression to the next. In order to preserve the integrity of each class, we reserve the right to transfer children who are not in the appropriate level.

Gym and Swim (2 years old)

Not offered in the summer session.

This is a one hour gym and swim program designed for 2 year old children. Play and movement skills in the program help develop the child’s physical and social skills. Adult participation is required in the gymnasium.

Gym and Swim (Ages 3 to 6)

Not offered in the summer session.

A one-hour gym and swim program designed for pre-schoolers. This program offers activities where children can build a solid background in motor coordination through play. Under careful supervision, children have the opportunity to develop body awareness through running, climbing, jumping, throwing, catching and using rhythm. Activities in the gym are followed by a swimming lesson.

Homeschoolers

Not offered in the summer session.

Three options are offered to children who are homeschooled:

  • Children ages 3 to 6 are invited to participate in the regular Gym and Swim program (see above).
  • Children ages 7 to 10 can participate in a more age-appropriate Gym and Swim program. The skills developed are similar to those in the regular program.
  • Children age 9 and up have the option of taking a 45-minute Olympic Way swimming lesson. Please refer to the swimming lessons schedule.

First time registrants in our special programs for children must speak with the Special Programs supervisors to ensure that your child is placed in the appropriate program. For more information, please contact Catherine O’Rourke (catherine.o’rourke@pointe-claire.ca) or Jane Stowe (jane.stowe@pointe-claire.ca)  by email or by calling 514-630-1202.

Aqua Percept (Ages 3-12)

Not offered in the summer session.

A gym and swim program for children who might not otherwise participate in regular physical activities. This may be due to poor coordination, perceptual motor difficulties or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A ratio of 3 children to 1 instructor along with positive reinforcement have made this program a resounding success.

Adapted Swim (Ages 3 to 17)

This program is designed for children with special needs. A low ratio of 2-1 or 1-1 allows the instructor to devote his/her full attention to the child’s needs.
