BACA 2024 – The Stewart Hall Art Gallery welcomes the seventh Contemporary Native Art Biennial

Creation Stories: Roots and Revelations
April 27 to June 23

The Stewart Hall Art Gallery is pleased to present Creation Stories: Roots and Revelations as part of the 7th edition of the Contemporary Native Art Biennial. This edition of BACA is curated by a collective of four curators, each of whom represents a geographical and cultural area determined by one of the four cardinal points: Lori Beavis will bring her expertise to present works representing the South and Centre, Emma Hassencahl-Perley will focus on the East, Jake Kimble on the West, and Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé will oversee the North.

The collaboration of these curators, each with diverse backgrounds and skills, is sure to create an outstanding exhibition. Their individual and collective efforts will provide visitors with a distinct perspective of the subject matter, creating a powerful visual narrative that explores the multidimensional aspects of Creation.

At the Stewart Hall Art Gallery, the exhibition’s theme is Roots and Revelations. Through the works of thirteen artists who actively connect to the past to reveal truths about our present day: Sierra Barber, Mel Beaulieu, Corey Bulpitt, Lianne Charlie, Hannah Claus, Heather Dickson, Marcy Friesen, Margaret Nazon, Luke Parnell, Jason Sikoak, Sgoagani Wecenisqon and Vance Wright. Through a variety of media including sculpture, installation, painting, beading and sewing, they share intimate moments of (re)learning and connection with their culture and community.

Launched in 2012, the BACA is a major visual arts event in Quebec presenting the work of some sixty artists from several nations across North America. This year’s edition of BACA will feature seven other exhibition venues, including DRAC (Drummondville), La Guilde (Montréal), Art Mûr Gallery (Montréal), McCord Museum (Montréal), Maison de la culture de Verdun (Montréal), Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke (Sherbrooke) and Expression – Centre d’exposition (Saint-Hyacinthe). This is the Stewart Hall Art Gallery’s 6th participation in the Contemporary Native Art Biennial.
